[Sam] built himself a boom box using salvaged parts and a car stereo. The case was cut using a CNC router he had access to at his school. The front panel is cut from a “Construction Ahead” road sign. The size of the case is based roughly on the rotting enclosures from which he pulled the speakers. He’s included connectors for external speakers as well as a USB charging port. The unit is powered by a gel battery and is recharged using an automotive battery charger. For this it was kept relatively simple. With the present day machines it is possible to make these joints faster and more accurate. Joinery made in this way is decorative as well as functional.
We love CNC hacks, so when [Jonny] sent in his nearly complete CNC router we were ecstatic. There are only a couple of posts thus far, and it takes some digging, but its pretty easy to understand his mindset and overall plan while making the CNC. It currently has full 3 axis movement and he replaced the previously dinky Harbor Freight Dremel with a much more powerful DeWalt that even Tim Taylor would be proud of. Software side of things he uses a combination of EMC2 and their collection

So, a spider was crawling across the roof of my car yesterday. Fast and very poisonous looking. Considering what you’re about to see, I’m fortunate it didn’t hop across the hood, onto my face and start drilling another face into my head bone. This video has been around a while, but I’d never seen it, and I’ve now watched it repeatedly to my own detriment. So, I thought you would enjoy seeing the tech, hearing the high-pitch whine of the drill as this CNC spiderbot, called the Hexapod, routes a

Shawn Small, owner of Ruckus Components, stands in his machine shop located in the Brooklyn neighborhood. (Photos © J. Maus) Carbon fiber has been the darling of the bike industry for years now. Lance Armstrong’s dominance aboard Trek’s OCLV model in the early part of this decade, and an industry-wide obsession for lightweight performance (and a need to sell new bikes), turned carbon fiber into the Next Big Thing. With Portland’s burgeoning bike industry, it was only a matter of time
